Today we celebrated Blessed John Newman who was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Britain in 2010. He is one of the most notable of converts to the Catholic Church and it was profound research in early Church history that led him to believe that the Catholic Church is the fullest extension in time of the Apostolic community commissioned by Jesus to continue his work. As a result of his conscientious conversion, he lost the friendship of most of his family.
In my few words after the gospel I said that his motto HEART SPEAKS TO HEART is an invitation to intimate friendship with God. I related this to the gospel (Luke 11) that spoke about the Fatherly goodness of God:
‘So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him. What father among you would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread? Or hand him a snake instead of a fish? Or hand him a scorpion if he asked for an egg? If you then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’
The following is a quote from Blessed John Henry Newman that could profitably be added to our daily Morning Prayers.
