Today we celebrate the mystic St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) to whom Jesus revealed the mysteries of his Sacred Heart. She was ordinary and average as an individual and religious sister. Yet she was favoured by God for a very special mission that would have a significant impact on the spiritual lives of millions of Catholics from her own time til now.
One of the basic messages of the Sacred Heart devotion was to make reparation for all those who are lukewarm or indifferent in their love for Jesus. We do this by loving Jesus all the more. We can do this by receiving Holy Communion frequently and with great love, particularly on First Fridays of the month. A second way is to make a private holy hour on Thursday evenings (perhaps in our own homes) in solidarity with Jesus and his Agony in the Garden of Gethsemanae – “My soul is overwhelmed to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matt 26:38)
Worthy of our meditation is St Margaret Mary’s last words: “I need nothing but God and to lose myself in the heart of Jesus.”
