Recently I had an interesting table conversation with friends regarding how the Church divine mercyshould promote the Sixth Commandment in the wake of the Sexual Revolution of the 1960’s. My friends said that if the Church is too rigid, then members will feel rejected and just walk away. I said that the Church has no authority to promote a way of life other than the one given to us by Jesus and the New Testament and this clearly limits sexuality to a valid marriage between a man and a woman. Our understanding of God’s Love cannot contradict his revelation of Truth. In the end, we had to agree to differ.

There is however one area where all those who believe in God must agree – and that is the primacy of trusting in God’s goodness. This is the subject of today’s Mid Morning Prayer from the Brievary.

A blessing on the man who puts his trust in the Lord, with the Lord for his hope. He is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foliage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit. (Jer 17:7-8)
