5th February – St Agatha, Virgin and Martyr

St Agatha was martyred at Catania in Sicily, probably during the St_Agatha_-_Buena_Vistapersecution of Decius (250-253). Devotion to her was widespread in the Church in the earliest times and she is mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

In today’s Evening Prayer the Magnificat antiphon has the following statement of her resolve to remain faithful to Christ. May we take these words to heart ourselves.

Lord Jesus Christ, my loving Master, I give you thanks for giving me the strength to overcome the torments which were brought against me; bid me come joyfully to your undying glory.
