For any one day in the Church’s liturgical year, the Opening Prayer for Mass and the close equivalent Concluding Prayer for the Divine Office indicates the main theme. Today’s prayer is:
You teach us, Lord,
to discipline the body for the good of the soul:
give us grace to refrain from all sin,
and to set our hearts on fulfilling your precepts.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
It tells us that personal discipline is cultivated by penance and acts of self-denial that are proper to the season of Lent. This asceticism will help us to say YES to the commandments of God and right living while saying NO to worldly, self-centred living.
