In today’s gospel Jesus sums up his life mission in a single sentence: The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. He came to offer his life as a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of humanity.
Jesus repeated the purpose of his sacrificial death in the Last Supper: THIS IS MY BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
As followers of Jesus, we too must strive to live sacrificially for others rather than for our selves.
