3rd December – St Francis Xavier

We all know that talk is cheap! That is the message of Jesus in today’s gates-of-heaven-e1415101499709gospel (Matt 7:21, 24-27): ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord”, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven.’ If we do our best to discern and do God’s will, our life will be like a house built on rock. We will withstand all the trials of life. What’s more the Kingdom of God will come about through us. Conversely if we do not seek God’s will, our life will be like a house built on sand that will crash when swept by the storms of life.

It is worth noting that this teaching of Jesus comes at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, the highpoint of all his preaching about the Kingdom of God. One of the most revolutionary and difficult aspects of the Sermon on the Mount is that we should love our enemies, and certainly not kill them.

I have before mentioned Fr Emmanuel McCarthy, my mentor in Christian Non-Violence and the whole challenge of trying to live out Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. If you have 13 minutes to spare, this is a youtube video on him speaking about the deeper meaning of Advent which he says is to become more attentive to the presence of God in our lives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2QJkLJyJx8&feature=youtu.be

He is a Catholic priest of the Eastern Melkite Rite, hence the layout of the sanctuary behind him.
