Yesterday I gave some quotes from the saints about the importance of puritychastity if we are to retain our spiritual perspective on life: Blessed are the pure of heart, they shall see God. Here are “10 ways to win the battle for purity” by Fr Ed Broom, OMV taken from the current edition of the Catholic Voice.

  1. Weapons of Prayer. Jesus told the disciples in Gethsamanae: “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Pray that you will not enter in the test.” (Matt 26:40-41)
  2. Don’t play with Fire. Respect proper boundaries.
  3. Modesty. The Catechism states that modesty is the guardian of the virtue of purity. (CCC #2521-24)
  4. Penance. Like spiritual birds we rise on the 2 wings of prayer and penance.
  5. Avoid Laziness. The devil soon finds work for idle hands and minds.
  6. Avoid improper Language. We should never speak dirty words, suggestive language or worse still, coarse, crude or impure jokes.
  7. Constant Vigilance – especially of the eyes. The eyes are the window of the soul.
  8. Confession and Renewed Hope. Failure isn’t the last word. Repent and make a new start.
  9. Frequent Holy Communion. Jesus is the Bread of Life that strengthens us on our pilgrim way to the Kingdom. He gives himself totally to us in the sacrament so we can say with St Paul: “It is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me.”
  10. Our Lady. She is Jesus’ designated spiritual mother in our lives as well as being our model and intercessor for all the virtues. Many blessings come us to through the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary.
