The right to life of the unborn hangs in the balance as next general election looms in Ireland. There has been relentless publicity over recent months for the repeal of the 8th Amendment to the Constitution which protects the right to life of the unborn. Catholic commentators have been stressing the importance of making this an election issue. This afternoon I emailed the below query to 12 of the 15 candidates running here in the Kerry constituency. (I couldn’t reasonably find email addresses for the other 3 candidates!)
This website contains the list of the declared candidates for the constituencies. http://adriankavanaghelections.org/2014/10/22/officially-declared-candidates-for-the-20152016-general-election/ Scroll down to find your one. Then google the candidate to lookup their contact information.
Can I suggest that you do what you can (if you are living in Ireland) to make this an election issue too?
Dear ?; I believe that the right to life is paramount. Without this right, the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness (to quote the US Declaration of Independence) means little.
With this in mind I would like to know your position on the 8th Amendment to the Constitution. Specifically I would like to know if you as a TD in the next Dail would do all you can to retain this barrier to legalised abortion in Ireland.
