27th June

The Opening Prayer for Sunday’s Mass sets an important theme for each week. Yesterday’s prayer went as follows:

since by the adoption of grace
you have made us children of light,
do not let false doctrine darken our minds,
but grant that your light may shine within us
and we may always live in the brightness of truth.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

We can see the importance this prayer places on finding and living the Truth. Truth is not something that we make up for ourselves according to the spirit of the age, what is fashionable and the latest media hype. Truth is revealed by God and then discovered by a properly formed conscience. Thereafter we live it out in the concrete circumstances of our lives as best we can. Yet there are many who take short cuts and mistake their ‘feelings’ about something to be the Truth.

In the Catholic Voice of 12th June, there was an interview with Cardinal Burke about the importance of developing a properly formed conscience.
