Today we celebrate Our Lady’s Assumption, body and soul, into heaven after the end of her earthly life. Today’s gospel was the Magnificat (Luke 1:39-56) which gives us a special insight into Our Lady. The point that catches my attention the most is that Our Lady is blessed, not primarily because she is the biological mother of Jesus but because she believed/trusted in God’s promises: Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.
Perhaps one way to describe her life of fidelity to God is with the following poem. The Thread that Our Lady followed was God’s Will and his Presence.
THE WAY IT IS
There’s a thread you follow.
It goes among things that change.
But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die;
And you suffer and get old.
Nothing you can do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
