Today is the feast of the Chair of St Peter. The idea of “Chair” represents the authority Jesus gave to him as we can see in the gospel of the day (Matt 16:13-19).
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said, ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’
Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a blessed man! Because it was no human agency that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my community. And the gates of the underworld can never overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

Knowing Jesus Personally: In today’s Gospel, Peter exclaimed that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus affirmed how truly blessed Peter was when enlightened by His Father in heaven. Ponder on your life and discover that the deepest joys were also when you experienced the Truth of the Father’s Spirit inspiring and guiding you.
- As Christians, it is not enough to live our faith just by fulfilling our obligations. Such faith is not deep. We need to build a personal relationship with Jesus through prayer. Is your faith focused on Jesus?
- Through faith and power of the Holy Spirit Peter was enlightened to know who Jesus truly is. Jesus also wants to ask you today, “Who do you say that I am”? What will be your answer?
- If our faith in Jesus Christ is strong, we will be living rocks or spiritual stones that can help build His Kingdom on earth with the boldness of Peter.
