holy spirit 5In today’s Office of Readings, St Basil is writing about baptism that immerses us in the death and resurrection of Christ. Immersion into the death of Christ leads us out of a worldly way of life; immersion into his resurrection leads us to live for God, like what St Paul says in Colossians 3:1-4 “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died [to this world], and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

St Basil gives this practical and profound advice on how to make this happen: “… the Lord to prepare us for the risen life, lays before us all the gospel precepts. We must avoid anger, endure evil, be free from the love of pleasure and the love of money.”
